VR coaching with the FutureRoom®method
Sometimes you get stuck. You lack motivation, have doubts about your studies or career, or don't know how to deal with stress, emotions, or loss. In my work as a psychologist and coach, I often see how important it is not just to look at what is difficult, but rather at where you want to go. What gives you energy? What helps you regain perspective?

Methodology
With the FutureRoom® Method and Virtual Reality (VR), I help young people and (young) adults explore and experience those questions. No endless conversations, but a fresh, innovative methodology that helps you immediately feel and see (in VR!) where your possibilities, strengths, and needs lie. In just three sessions , you regain perspective and experience the first steps towards change.
A future-oriented approach
In psychology, the focus is often on complaints and obstacles. But it is precisely by looking at what is possible that space for growth and change is created. With the FutureRoom® method, I guide you in a way that is experiential, practical, and positive. In just one session, you will often notice that you switch back on and gain more confidence in the future.

For whom?
Young people are the future, and that future begins now. Through the FutureRoom® method, I want to make them feel what they can do, let them focus on successes instead of setbacks, and rekindle that spark early in their development.
My main focus is therefore on adolescents and young adults, but I also offer sessions for adults.
Young people, young adults & students
Questions regarding motivation, switching back on, dealing with stress and emotions (sadness, anxiety, grief, etc.), study and career choices, and finding meaning.
Adults
Questions regarding motivation, switching back 'on', dealing with stress and emotions (sadness, anxiety, grief, etc.), and finding meaning.
How does it work?
A FutureRoom® program consists of three sessions of approximately 2 hours, spread over a few weeks. In a safe and relaxed setting, I will guide you through the VR sessions, and together we will clarify your needs.

Pilot opportunities in your organization
Curious about what the methodology can mean for your students, young people, employees, or others? Interested in conducting a pilot first with, for example, three, five, or ten participants? Feel free to send an email, and we will look into the possibilities!

My experience
VR Future coach & Supervisor VR Futurecoach training
A number of years ago – when the FutureRoom® method was still under development – I had the opportunity to experiment with the methodology. Since then, I have had the pleasure of coaching nearly 100 young people and (young) adults using the method! For instance, I have coached over 60 young people as part of scientific research into the methodology in collaboration with De VRanderkamer and Leiden University, and I am currently participating in a pilot to implement The FutureRoom® for the mental healthcare waiting list approach at GGZ Rivierduinen. I am also happily involved as a Supervisor in the training for new VR FutureCoaches!

The science behind it
The FutureRoom® method is supported by the following
(neuro)scientific insights:
-
Strong identification with the future self: Emotional connection with the future stimulates healthier choices and motivation (Joireman et al., 2012).
-
Closed questions for less decision stress: closed questions within the methodology provide structure and make choosing easier, which reduces decision stress (Bertrand & Mullainathan, 2001).
-
Enhances ownership and control: VR offers a sense of control, which reduces stress and increases well-being (Rotter, 1966; Judge & Bono, 2001).
-
Goal-oriented behavioral change: Specific goals, linked to emotions, motivate action and long-lasting change (Locke & Latham, 2002; Kuhl, 1985).
-
Impact of VR: VR makes the future realistic, reinforces behavior through avatars (Yee & Bailenson, 2007), and ensures focus without distraction (Stein & Witmer, 2024).
-
Positive coaching approach: The Pygmalion effect and humor promote growth and performance (Rosenthal & Jacobson, 1968).
